Everything You Need To Know About Paslode Nail Guns

Last updated: January 11, 2023

Paslode are the industry leader for quality professional nail guns, and they have become the go-to brand for carpenters, tradesmen and contractors alike. They created the world’s first pneumatic nailer in 1959 and have grown to become one of the most recognisable names in fastening solutions, developing innovative new technologies and features for cordless and pneumatic nailers.

In this blog post we’re going to take a look at the range of Paslode framing nailers and finishing nailers, to give you the run down of their features and specifications.

Framing nailer vs finishing nailer

Paslode offer two distinctly different types of nail gun – 1st fix and 2nd fix, also known as framing nailers and finishing nailers. Let’s take a look at the differences between the two as they can certainly look similar!

Framing Nailers

1st fix nail guns, also known as framing nailers, are generally used for completing woodworking tasks in construction like flooring, roofing, and wood framing.

These nail guns use large nails which often leave impressions in the wood, and are therefore intended for use in areas which aren’t going to be visible once the project is completed.

Framing nailers provide lots of power and are ideal for giving structural rigidity to wooden frames, rather than more delicate work.

Finishing Nailers

2nd fix nail guns, also known as finishing nailers, are ideal for working on “softer” interior jobs such as door frames, mouldings, and other aesthetic fixtures.

These nail guns use much smaller nails which don’t leave many visible impressions or damage on the work area, so they are perfect for tasks where a clean finish is required.

Framing nailers also come in straight and angled options, with angled nail guns being the most popular due to their flexibility and ease of use in hard to reach places.

Nails

When purchasing nails for your nail gun, you have to make sure that you’re choosing the correct type for your model of nailer.

For a 1st fix or framing nailer, you’ll want to use large ring shank nails. The extra weight and size is required for adding structural integrity to the workpiece.

For a 2nd fix or finishing nailer, you should look for smaller and thinner brad nails which will help to provide a clean finish with less damage to the woodwork.

Let’s take a look at each type

Ring Shank Nails

Ring shank nails are suitable for use in both soft and hard wood, as the crevasses in the ringed shank provide friction which offer superior holding power and prevents the nail from backing out over time.

Available in a range of different sizes, these nails can come in finishes to add extra durability such as a bright finish or electro galvanization. Often these nails will be designed to withstand adverse weather conditions and corrosion, making them suitable for outdoor use.

Brad Nails

Brad nails come in both angled and straight form, and a higher gauge number (usually between 18 and 21).

They can come in a variety of different lengths and can also feature additional surface treatments like electro galvanization to help protect against corrosion and damage.

These nails are best for interior use as they are not designed for outdoor use, so they should usually be used with a framing nailer.
