Step-by-Step Guide to Coving Installation
1. Preparation
- Ensure the room is clean and free of dust. Use a dust sheet if needed.
- Check for hidden pipes using a pipe detector before marking or fixing coving.
2. Measuring and Marking
- Check manufacturer’s instructions for recommended distances from wall and ceiling for fixing coving.
- Mark pair points on the wall and ceiling at 600mm intervals around the room.
- Use a long spirit level to draw continuous pencil lines connecting these marks.
- Measure the lengths of coving needed for each wall, accounting for internal and external corners.
- Mark the direction of cuts (wall edge and ceiling edge) on the coving pieces.
3. Cutting the Coving
Using Milwaukee Mitre Saw
- Set the saw to cut coving at a 45-degree angle.
- Place the coving on the saw table with the top edge against the saw fence.
- Adjust the blade guide to the left for right-end cuts or the right for left-end cuts.
- Hold the coving securely against the fence and cut smoothly for a clean finish.
- The wall face is the longest end; it’s the shortest for external corners.

Using a Mitre Box (Alternative Method)
- Secure the mitre box on a workbench.
- Place the coving in the mitre box with the wall edge at the top.
- Use a fine-toothed hand saw to make 45-degree cuts as marked.
- Lightly sand the ends for a smooth finish.
- Mitre boxes ensure a neater finish by holding the coving steady as you cut, using slots to maintain alignment.

4. Fitting the Coving
- If needed, you might have to cut the length of the coving matching mitre cuts and join them on the wall when you fit them ( as the most common coving length is 3000mm)
- Hold each cut piece in position to check the fit against the wall and ceiling.
- Score the wall and ceiling along the guideline marks with a sharp knife.
- Apply a generous line of coving adhesive to the top and bottom edges of the coving.
- Press the coving into position along the guideline marks, starting from one end and working your way to the other.
- Secure the coving with panel pins hammered into the wall underneath the base at 500mm intervals.
- Remove excess adhesive with a scraper and damp cloth.
Note: When installing coving, always start with a corner.
5. Finishing Touches
- Fill gaps between adjoining pieces of coving or between coving and the wall/ceiling with caulk.
- Allow the adhesive to dry completely before removing any temporary supports (panel pins).
- If painting, wait at least 24 hours after installation. Prime first, and then apply a coat of matt emulsion paint.
Installing coving is a great way to enhance a room’s appearance during a home improvement project, adding elegance and character. By following these steps and using the correct tools, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that complements your interior decor beautifully.
