​​Tek Screws or Tech Screws? What are they, and how to use them?

Tek Screws, Tech Screws or Self Drilling Screws are only a few names the industry uses. We’ve noticed a lot of confusion and questions around this subject, so we figured out that it is only fair to do some research and give you a better understanding of this product.

Tek Screws are a popular choice that covers an extensive range of applications since they don’t require any pre-drilling. Their design allows them to be screwed directly into various materials.

With an extensive range of Tek Screw types and designs available, some of the applications they are used for include: self-drilling into metal sheets, steel, timber, wood and more. This leads to confusion and explains why they are also known as self-drilling or self-tapping screws.

Now, we have come across different terms, such as tech screws, tec screws, teck screws and some other variations, but unfortunately, this is just the result of misspelling. Sorry guys 🙁 

Their use is well spread across a wide range of jobs; thus their design varies based on their application. They are manufactured in different shapes and sizes, with hexagon or Torx heads, some even built-in washers. However, one thing is for sure they are the most popular choice for roofing jobs.

These Self Drilling screws are perfect for fixing Steel Sheets to Steel Purlings. They are specially coated for corrosion, while the hexagon head offers fast and efficient screwing. Most commonly used for fixing metal roofing panels to steel frame buildings. With an 8mm hex head and 16mm runner washer included, they are specially coated with the Elementech Coating against corrosion. They require a no.3 drill tip for self-drilling into heavy gauge stainless steel of up to 5mm.

Used for the same range of applications as the ones with the washer, they come in lots of sizes, including 5.5 x 25mm, 5.5x 32mm, 5×5 x 35m, 5.5 x 45mm, 5.5 x 50mm, 5.5 x 57mm, 5.5 x 70mm, 5.5 x 75, 5.5 x 100mm.


Composite Sheet to Steel Roofing Screws (Heavy Duty)

These Sheet to Steel Composite Roofing Screws are perfect for fixing composite panels to steel frames. They feature a compression control thread with the same 8mm Hex Head and 16mm washer, particularly preventing panel damage. An anti-corrosive coating requires a no.5 drill for self-drilling of up to 12.5 cm into steel and comes in the following sizes: 5.5 x 85mm, 5.5 x 150mm, 5.5 x 125mm & 5.5 x 105mm.

Moreover, these metal screws are also available with a 19mm rubber washer in various sizes: 5.5 x 75mm, 5.5 x 105mm, 5.5 x 235mm, 5.5 x 185mm, 5.5 x 130mm, and 5.5 x 150mm.

TechFast Roofing Screw Composite Sheet to Steel Light Duty

Designed for the same use as the heavy-duty screws, these metal screws require a no: 3 drill tip for a light gauge steel drilling of up to 5mm. They join composite panels to steel frame buildings with either 16mm or 19mm washers.


Sheet to Timber Roofing Screw

These Sheet to Timber Metal Screws are designed for fixing metal roofing panels to timber frames. With an 8mm Hexagonal Head and 16mm EPDM washer included, they feature the T17 Gash Point for the fastest and most efficient screwing on a steel thickness of 0.5 up to 1.2mm. The Elementech coating offers them maximum protection against corrosion & fire. They come in various sizes: 6.3 x 25mm and up to 6.3 x 150mm.


Sheet to Sheet Roofing Stitching Screws

The Stitching Screws are perfect for joining metal sheets to metal sheets together. With a hex head and is complete with a 16mm washer. Their self-drilling point helps speed up their screwing, while they can join up to 3 sheets of up to 0.7 mm. They come in one size 6.3 x 22m, with an 8mm hex head, requiring a no.1 drill tip.


Timber to Steel (Heavy Duty)

Countersunk Timber to Steel Screw – Torx Head (Heavy Section)

These Countersunk Roofing Screws are perfect for Timber to Steel applications. They feature a Torx Compatible Countersunk Head and breakaway wings designed for creating a clearance hole in the timber while eliminating the “jacking”. They are capable of fixing timber to steel between 6 to 12.5 mm and are anti-corrosive, and come complete with FOC Torx in the pack. Available in 3 sizes: 5.5 x 60mm, 5.5 x 85mm & 5.5 x 109mm

Tek Timber to Steel Roofing Screw (Heavy Duty)

These TechFast Timber to Steel Screws are designed for self-drilling in gauge steel of up to 12.5mm while using a no.5 drill tip. Moreover, the breakaway wings create a hole before breaking off when meeting the metal. Used for fixing timber to steel frames, they feature a Torx-compatible head. Available in various sizes from 5.5 x 40 to 5.5 x 150mm.

Timber to Steel Roofing Screws (Light Duty)

The TechFast Timber to Steel Screws can self-drill heavy gauge steel of up to 5mm, by using a no.2 drill tip. Designed for joining Timber to Steel frame buildings, they feature the same specs as the heavy-duty screws, including breakaway wings, Torx compatibility, anti-corrosive & improved countersinking. Available in multiple sizes, including 4×8 x 38mm, 5.5 x 40mm and up to 5.5 x 150mm.
