How to Choose a Makita Charger
Choosing the right Makita charger is crucial to ensure efficient and safe charging for your Makita batteries. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make the best choice:
- Identify Your Battery Type: Makita produces a variety of batteries, including 18V LXT Lithium-Ion, 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion, and XGT Lithium-Ion. Make sure you know which type of battery you have, as different chargers are designed for specific battery types.
- Consider Charging Speed: Determine how quickly you need your batteries to charge. Makita offers chargers with different charging speeds, ranging from standard to fast chargers. Fast chargers can significantly reduce charging time but may come at a higher cost.
- Evaluate Charging Capacity: Makita chargers vary in their capacity to charge multiple batteries simultaneously. If you often work with multiple batteries or need quick turnaround times between charges, consider a charger with dual-port or multi-port charging capabilities.
- Check Compatibility: Ensure that the charger you select is compatible with the voltage and capacity of your Makita batteries. Using an incompatible charger can result in inefficient charging or even damage to your batteries.
- Consider Portability: If you frequently work in different locations or on job sites, consider the portability of the charger. Some Makita chargers are compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport, while others may be bulkier and more suitable for stationary use.
- Look for Safety Features: Safety is paramount when it comes to battery charging. Choose a Makita charger equipped with safety features such as overcharge protection, temperature control, and over-discharge protection to prevent damage to your batteries and ensure safe operation.
- Read Reviews and Ratings: Before making a purchase, take the time to read reviews and ratings of the charger you’re considering. Feedback from other users can provide valuable insights into the charger’s performance, reliability, and durability.

FAQ
Can I leave my Makita battery on the charger indefinitely?
It’s not recommended to leave the battery on the charger indefinitely as it may lead to overcharging and reduce the battery’s lifespan. Once the battery is fully charged, it’s best to remove it from the charger.
Can I charge my LXT Battery with an XGT Charger?
No, you cannot charge an LXT battery directly on an XGT charger. Makita LXT and XGT batteries use different charging platforms and voltages, so attempting to charge an LXT battery on an XGT charger or vice versa is not recommended and may result in damage to the battery or charger. However, Makita offers an adapter (ADP10) that allows you to charge XGT and LXT batteries using the same XGT charger. This Makita 191C10-7 ADP10 XGT to LXT Charger Adaptor provides compatibility between the two battery platforms, enabling users to utilise their existing charger for both LXT and XGT batteries.
NOTE: An LTX charger cannot be used to charge an XGT battery.
